Megacity

A megacity is a metropolitan area exceeding 10 million inhabitants. The UN counts about 35 megacities in 2024, up from just 2 (New York and Tokyo) in 1950. Rapid urbanization has driven growth particularly in Asia and Africa.

Largest megacities: Tokyo metro area (37M), Delhi (32M), Shanghai (29M), Sao Paulo (22M), Mexico City (22M). Asia contains about 60% of all megacities.
