Urbanization Rate

Urbanization rate is the percentage of a country total population residing in urban areas. The global average is about 57% (2024), but varies enormously. City-states (Singapore, Monaco, Vatican) are 100% urban by definition.

Developed nations are typically highly urbanized (Japan 92%, UK 84%, USA 83%). Sub-Saharan African developing nations sit much lower (Burundi 14%, Niger 17%, Malawi 18%). China urbanization surged from 20% in 1980 to about 65% in 2024.

Urbanization rate 100% means city-states (Singapore, Monaco, Vatican). Below 20% means Sub-Saharan African rural nations (Burundi, Niger, Malawi).
