Absolute Monarchy

An absolute monarchy is a political system where the monarch (king, sultan, emir) exercises state power without constitutional or parliamentary constraints. Unlike constitutional monarchies (UK, Japan) where royal power is limited, absolute monarchs hold final decision-making authority.

Only 5 countries maintain absolute monarchy in 2024: Saudi Arabia (king), Brunei (sultan), Oman (sultan), Qatar (emir), and Eswatini (king). Four are Middle Eastern oil states; only Eswatini is in southern Africa.

Knowing that a country is an absolute monarchy instantly limits it to these 5 countries. Absolute monarchy + Africa means Eswatini alone. Absolute monarchy + Southeast Asia means Brunei alone. Within political systems, this is an especially powerful narrowing pattern.
