How Many Countries Are in the World? UN Members vs. Non-Members

(Updated: 2025-05-10)

193 UN Member States

As of 2024, there are 193 member states in the United Nations. However, the answer to "how many countries are there" varies depending on your criteria. Do you count only UN members? Include observer states (Vatican City, Palestine)? Or also count de facto independent territories like Taiwan and Kosovo that lack widespread international recognition?

Defining a Country - The Montevideo Convention

The most widely referenced legal framework for statehood is the 1933 Montevideo Convention, which lists four requirements: (1) a permanent population, (2) a defined territory, (3) a government, and (4) the capacity to enter into relations with other states. However, meeting these criteria does not guarantee recognition by the international community.

Unrecognized States and Territories

Taiwan operates as an independent state with its own government, military, and currency, but most UN members recognize the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and is recognized by over 100 countries, but opposition from Russia and China prevents UN membership.
