Political Geography
Territory refers to the geographic area over which a state exercises exclusive sovereignty. In its broadest sense, it includes land territory, territorial waters (12 nautical miles from the coast), and airspace above both.
Russia is generally cited as the largest sovereign state by territory and Vatican City as the smallest. Exact area figures differ between sources depending on whether inland and coastal waters are counted.
