Apartheid
Apartheid (Afrikaans for separation) was the system of racial segregation enforced in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. A white minority controlled politics and economics while legally discriminating against non-white populations.
Under apartheid, residential areas, education, healthcare, transport, and public facilities were racially segregated. Nelson Mandela was released in 1990, and the first all-race elections in 1994 ended apartheid. Mandela became South Africas first Black president.
In GeoHint, apartheid, racial segregation history, or Mandela instantly identifies South Africa. South Africa also uniquely has 3 capitals (administrative: Pretoria, legislative: Cape Town, judicial: Bloemfontein).
