Isthmus

An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger landmasses. While a strait is water between two lands, an isthmus is land between two waters. Isthmuses serve as land bridges between continents but block maritime routes, historically motivating canal construction.

Major isthmuses: Panama (connecting North and South America, narrowest point 64km, Panama Canal), Suez (connecting Africa and Asia, Suez Canal), Kra (narrowest point of Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand, canal proposed), Corinth (Greece, connecting Peloponnese to mainland, Corinth Canal).

In GeoHint, isthmus connecting two continents means Panama (Americas) or Egypt (Africa-Asia). Has a canal through an isthmus also suggests Panama or Egypt.
